What factors affect the sustainability of refrigerators?
The sustainability of ultra-low temperature refrigerators is a challenge: maintaining extremely low temperatures of -80 ° C or even -86 ° C 24/7 requires energy consumption.
The stored samples must be safe: once the refrigerator door is opened, you expect to quickly recover to -80 ° C. Efficient cooling requires energy consumption and a powerful compressor system.
There are multiple factors that can affect the energy consumption of laboratory refrigerators at ultra-low temperatures:
› Insulation material thickness
› Insulation type
› Type of coolant
› Compressor efficiency
› Compressor control
Cooling system pressure
Type of refrigeration circuit (diameter, length, density, etc.)
› Outer door seal
Internal door seal
Internal door insulation

Hydrocarbons - Future Green Cooling
In 2014, the European Union announced a ban on the use of all non hydrocarbon liquids by 2020 (EU_517/2014). This ban includes all refrigeration equipment except for those below -50 ° C. Based on this exception, the -86 ° C ultra-low temperature refrigerator can continue to use non hydrocarbon refrigerants such as HFCs. However, due to the need to mitigate global warming, it is also necessary to replace the HFC coolant for ULTRA.
What coolants can be used as green alternatives? Hydrocarbon gases are also known as green gases or natural gases. The two main representative hydrocarbon gases used for refrigeration are propane and ethane (also known as R290 and R170). According to IEC 60335-2-89, there is no need for additional safety instructions for Ultra Low Temperature refrigerators that use green gas.
Based on this goal, Eppendorf has a clear plan to replace all Ultra refrigerators that use classic coolant in the coming years.

Do you remember 2008?
As one of the leading advocates for green gas in ultra-low temperature refrigerators at -86 ° C, Eppendorf has 12 years of experience in research and development, production, logistics, and service in this field.
In 2008, the Eppendorf New Brunswick Premium U570h became the first commercially available Ultra low temperature refrigerator to use green coolant.

Has the air-cooled model reached its limit? Try water-cooled models
It is possible to improve laboratory conditions and save energy by installing Ultra Low Temperature Refrigerators with water cooling models. Many laboratory refrigerators remove heat from the refrigerator heat exchanger through gas circulation. Another solution is to use a water-cooled ultra-low temperature refrigerator and connect it to the facility's circulating water system. Take away the heat from the heat exchanger through continuous water circulation (rather than air circulation) instead of the air in the laboratory.
What are the advantages of the water cooling process in Ultra refrigerators?
Reduce air conditioning energy consumption by continuously circulating water instead of air to remove heat from the heat exchanger.
After being heated, cold water can also be used for other heating systems
System specifications:
› Minimum flow rate: 29 L/h
› Inlet pressure: 1-10 bar
Water temperature range: 7 ° C to 25 ° C

Disposal of packaging and instruments
The package of ULT refrigerator contains various materials, including wooden tray, cardboard, plastic dust cover and some foam parts. The recycling of materials is becoming increasingly important: Did you know that nearly 100% of cardboard materials are recycled in Europe? Our refrigerator packaging cardboard material includes approximately 70% recycled materials. Please support the global sustainable development initiative of recycling valuable raw materials by collecting refrigerator cardboard packaging materials and storing them in appropriate recycling containers. For the plastic dust cover made of LD-PE and foam, we recommend to choose a special recycling partner material that can recycle PE materials. We suggest that you contact your local waste transporter or facility management team to learn about the available recycling options for your organization.
Our refrigerators can be used for many years, but if they need to be replaced, please meet the local requirements for handling these instruments. We strongly recommend that you have a certified local recycling partner with extensive experience in active refrigeration instruments. Staying 'local' can reduce the impact of transportation, and it is recommended to be 'certified' as coolant needs to be removed and recycled in a safe and sustainable manner.
